Director Nate Turner was born and raised in the City of Chicago and currently resides in Chicago with his wife and two sons. He will work with neighborhood schools and community groups in an effort to refer, direct and place qualified minority applicants into Building Trade Apprenticeship programs.  Mr. Turner is a proud member of IBEW Local #134. He has worked as an apprentice electrician and a journeyman.  Nate has a long and storied career as a high school and college football standout with Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago and later with the University of Nebraska.  After college, Nate played professional football with the Buffalo Bills. Nate Turner brings years of experience and professionalism to the new LMCC.  The Chicago & Cook County Building Trades Council is proud to be working with Executive Director Nate Turner.

bulletEmployee Free Choice

The Employee Free Choice Act is critically important legislation that will help to restore our middle class and give working Americans the right to bargain for a better life.  There are a number of misconceptions being tossed around about the Employee Free Choice Act and that number seems to grow with each passing day. Those that are opposed to the Employee Free Choice Act are constantly providing misinformation and half truths, in a well planned concentrated effort to distort, misinterpret and attack the actual Act. The question that is brought up the most often is: Does the Employee Free Choice Act eliminate the secret ballot election?  The most simple and straight forward answer is NO. The Employee Free Choice Act would allow for the workers to decide, not the company or corporation, whether to form their union via an election or a majority sign up. Employees can still have an election if they so choose.

Make no mistake that the business community opposes this critical legislation, which would provide their employees the right to be represented by a union and allowed to engage in collective bargaining.  CEO's and corporate heads make sure and insist that they are fully protected by contracts each and every day.  They want to be sure that their enormous salaries, bonuses and perks are secure and protected.  Why shouldn't the average working person also be protected?  If your boss can get a contract that protects him or her, then why shouldn't you be entitled to one.

You should know that recent polling indicates that close to 3/4's of the American public supports the Employee Free Choice Act and more will support it once they fully understand it. It's no surprise that working men and women are in favor of legislation that supports and benefits them.  Now is the time to let your voice be heard.  Stand up for your rights and the rights of all working Americans.  Let your Federally elected officials know how you feel.  They were elected to represent you, carry your message and look out for your best interest.  Tell them that you are in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act and you believe it must be passed this year.

2016 Summer Olympics

There has never been a better time for the summer games to come to our City.  It has been reported that the Olympics would generate over 2.5 billion dollars in revenues.  Those dollars are desperately needed in this downturn economy.  Our City is the perfect venue for the 2016 Summer Games, the majority of events would take place along our beautiful lake front.   The selection sites put 90% of the athletes within 15 minutes of their events.  This is not only advantageous for the participants but is ideal for the hundreds of thousands of spectators and media.

Our City and it's neighborhoods would greatly benefit from infrastructure improvements, with much needed permanent new structures and quality built residential units.  This work would be done by local workers bringing a welcomed economic boom to the building trades and local area construction firms as well as local businesses; while creating years of construction jobs and millions of man hours.

The Chicago & Cook County Building Trades is currently prepared to enter into a Project Labor Agreement,100% Union, insuring quality work provided on time and without work stoppages; which is both critical and essential when timetables and deadlines must be strictly adhered to. A project such as this would create many new building trade apprentices providing not only jobs but careers for the people of our great City.  Many of these jobs would start once Chicago is given the bid and they couldn't come at a better time.

We support Chicago 2016 and their efforts in securing the 2016 Summer Olympics. Please get on board the 2016 Olympic train and support the City of Chicago as it pursues and plans for 2016. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we all need to do everything that we can to support Chicago's bid.  Each and every Chicago resident should embrace and support Chicago 2016.
